“I spend an incredible amount of time daydreaming of places where the sun never sets. Of places where crystal blue waves crash on remote beaches. Of small Portuguese towns that refuse to update their cobblestone streets no matter how much they inconvenience the residents. I’ve recently learned that this intense longing to be everywhere and experience everything all at once is called “Fernweh” — a German word that literally translates to distance-sickess. To satisfy this feeling, I paint.
I paint these faraway places I dream of going to, and create my own version without ever setting foot there. Using oil paints allows blending for days (no but actually, they take weeks to dry) and creates that dream-like depth I strive for. My walls are filled with canvases and scratch paper, each with their own mini world, so I really can be everywhere, all at once.”
